Land Acknowledgement
for Belfast Maine
In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent how very important land acknowledgements are. I get to live in one of the most beautiful, enriching places on the planet, but I get to live here because the land was taken from indigenous people by other members of my race, hundreds of years ago.
As I help heal, nourish and restore human bodies, in a very small way I seek to do the same for this land that we call Belfast, Maine, by acknowledging who was here first. (It sure wasn’t us.)
To that end, I would like to point you to my neighbor down the road, smudge studio.
smudge studio opened a fascinating new creative project in downtown Belfast called OBSERVATORY, which is maybe 800 yds from where my office is at The Belfast Center. OBSERVATORY is described as:
GEO | COSMO FIELD STATION, WORKSHOP + TEA HUT 茶舎
at 158 High Street, Belfast, ME + Brooklyn + Japan
44°25'35" N 69°0'27" W, facing 28°NE, elevation approx. 90ft
situated on the St. Croix Belt of the Penobscot Formation
They have thoroughly researched the history of the land where we live and work and with their permission, I link to their excellent information: Living Planetary Land Acknowledgement.
Also, Educational Resources from Wabanaki Reach. On this page are resources for truth, healing and change in Wabanaki Territory, Land Acknowledgements - Resources for Learning and Teaching, Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act of 1980 Resources for Continued Learning, Literary Resource List, and Historical Timeline of Wabanaki-Maine Relations
I am just beginning my education and hope that these links are an encouragement to you as well.
